Reception Class

In Reception, we provide a warm, safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where every child feels seen, valued and inspired to learn. We believe the early years should be filled with wonder, belonging and joyful discovery, while also laying strong foundations for lifelong learning.

A Holistic Start to Learning

At the beginning of the year, our focus is on wellbeing and helping each child grow and thrive socially, emotionally and academically. As children settle into new rhythms and routines, they build friendships, develop independence and explore their world through creative, imaginative and purposeful play.

Each day begins with Circle Time, where we talk, sing, share feelings and build a sense of community. These moments support communication, emotional literacy and confidence, while helping children feel secure and connected.

Learning Through Inquiry, Guided Play and Challenge

Our learning is shaped through guided play, inquiry and challenge-based learning, where children are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, explore ideas and take ownership of their learning.

Through our topics of inquiry, children engage in meaningful experiences that connect learning to the world around them:

Magical Me

Children learn about themselves, their families and what makes each person unique through stories, songs, role play and creative exploration.

Festivals and Celebrations

Children explore cultures and traditions, express themselves through art and storytelling, and celebrate events such as the Festival of Lights in India, deepening their understanding of the wider world.

Happiness and Mindfulness

In the New Year, we focus on gratitude, growth mindset, mindfulness and emotional wellbeing. Through yoga, meditation, breathing exercises and self-regulation tools, children build resilience, confidence and strategies to self-rescue when challenges arise.

Spring Changes

Children investigate seasonal change through nature exploration, growing cress and sunflowers, outdoor learning and preparing for Sports Day. Our Farmersโ€™ Market and Cafรฉ invites children into rich collaborative role play, where they buy, sell, negotiate and problem-solve together.

21st Century Learning Skills

Alongside early literacy and numeracy, we intentionally nurture 21st century learning skills, helping children become curious, capable and compassionate learners.

We focus on developing:

Creativity

Children generate ideas, imagine possibilities, create, design and express themselves through open-ended exploration and play.

Collaboration

Through shared projects, role play, partner work and group challenges, children learn to listen, cooperate, negotiate and work together.

Communication

Children are encouraged to express thoughts, ask questions, explain ideas and build confidence in speaking and listening.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Through challenge-based learning, children investigate, experiment, make decisions and persevere through trial and error.

Emotional Wellbeing and Resilience

We support children in understanding emotions, managing challenges, developing a growth mindset and building inner confidence.

These skills are woven into everyday learning and help children develop as independent thinkers and active participants in their own learning journey.

Literacy and Numeracy

Children learn the alphabet through sensory play, songs, games and meaningful experiences, growing into confident early readers who enjoy taking home reading and library books. Children learn to have a love of books.

Mathematical understanding develops through hands-on, differentiated and stimulating activities that build confidence with number, shape, space and pattern.

We celebrate effort as much as achievement, encouraging children to take risks, try something new, reflect on their learning and make connections across experiences.

Guided Play with Purpose

Play is at the heart of Reception. Through carefully designed environments and thoughtful adult guidance, children learn through exploration, inquiry and imagination.

Whether building, designing, storytelling, investigating or collaborating in role play, children are developing essential skills while experiencing the joy of learning.

Our Learners

We aim for every child to leave Reception as:

  • Curious and creative thinkers
  • Collaborative and caring friends
  • Resilient and emotionally aware individuals
  • Confident communicators
  • Independent and capable learners

Above all, we want children to feel happy, empowered and excited to learn.
