Student Councils and Democratic Education 

At Rygaards School, we place great importance on student council work. The councils form an essential part of the school’s democratic culture and give students the opportunity to influence their everyday school life, practise participation and develop a sense of responsibility. Student councils exist all the way down to the youngest year groups, ensuring that pupils experience early on that their voice matters and that community is shaped through dialogue.

Each council is supported by designated teachers who help provide continuity and structure. The oldest councils meet both separately and jointly across departments, where they plan and carry out shared initiatives that strengthen cohesion throughout the school.

Elections and Participation 

Every year in Week 36, the school holds a joint election week focusing on democracy, representation and responsibility. The week serves as preparation for the election or re-election of student representatives and is also a shared celebration of student voice and participation in the school community.

Student representatives also take part in the school’s values committees, where they contribute to discussions about which values the school should prioritise and how these are put into practice. In this way, students gain genuine influence on the development of the school.
